WHO Worries that Handling of European Covid-19 Cases is Going Wrong

WHO asks Europe to handle Covid-19 before winter starts.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GENEVA – The rate of Covid-19 infection and hospital bed occupancy is increasing in Europe. World Health Organization (WHO) officials called on authorities to try to stop the spread of the virus ahead of winter.

“Europe has a lot of work to do to stabilize the situation and control transmission (of the virus),” WHO emergencies expert Mike Ryan told a news conference. “Overall in this very large area we are seeing an alarming increase in infections.”

WHO technical head for Covid-19, Maria Van Kerkhove, said Europe was at the end of September and had not yet entered winter.

“So what we are worried about is the possibility that this trend is going in the wrong direction,” he said. “Getting to the hospital early and taking the steroid drug dexamethasone saves lives,” he added.

Kerkhove said all parties wanted to avoid a national lockdown like what happened in the beginning (of the pandemic). “
