WHO gives final verdict on ibuprofen and coronavirus

One of the great controversies associated with the coronavirus and with the effects of some drugs in its fight, have to do with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, and whether or not they have harmful effects that could aggravate the illness.

This Monday, April 20, the World Health Organization published a final study where all controversy is settled and it pointed out that these remedies provide neither benefits nor risks to patients infected with Covid-19.

“Currently, there is no evidence that the use of NSAIDs causes serious adverse events, acute use of medical care, long-term survival or quality of life in patients with Covid-19,” the agency said in the document.

This conclusion was finally obtained after an analysis of 73 cases, in which acute viral respiratory infections or conditions commonly caused by respiratory viruses were studied.

What was found here is that there is an extremely low incidence in mortality rates associated with the use of these drugs, and therefore there is no conclusive evidence to say that ibuprofen worsens a coronavirus condition.

According to the first hints that were released, these nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could lead to risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and myocardial infarction in adults with acute respiratory infections.

Another WHO conclusion was that there is “little to no difference” between ibuprofen and acetaminophen (acetaminophen) among children with fever regarding effects on death from all causes, hospitalization from any cause, acute kidney failure and acute gastrointestinal bleeding. “

Lastly, the agency reported that “no direct evidence was found from patients with Covid-19, SARS or MERS. Therefore, all the included evidence should be considered indirect evidence regarding the use of NSAIDs before or during the management of the new coronavirus. ”

Another of the great myths that this COVID-19 has left that has been collapsed by the world health authorities and that will mark milestones within this pandemic and how we are facing it in society.
