While France has nearly five million legal gun owners, it is estimated that at least two million French people hold untitled guns, mostly for hunting or from World War I and World War II.
Most of these weapons illegally held on the national territory have been acquired by inheritance, most of the time without knowing the legal framework for the possession of these weapons. Through this operation, the prefectures indicate that they want “offer these holders in good faith the possibility of simply disposing of them or legally retaining them“.
The simplified surrender of arms to the state operation is available throughout mainland France and some overseas territories.
These restitutions of arms and ammunition will be carried out without administrative formalities with the police and gendarmes present in the dedicated sites. If you wish to keep them, prefectural agents will also be present to help you register your weapons in the Weapons Information System (SIA).
