Cancellations and delays programmed: Smooth train traffic is not possible this year either. Because Deutsche Bahn has planned some construction sites – mainly to further modernize the existing rail network. Cost: 60 billion euros. In the long term, this is a win for all rail passengers, but in the short term it is more of a game of patience on some routes.
Disturbances, delays, failures … The travel reporter has compiled the largest construction sites at main stations and railway lines for you.
Frankfurt main station
From May, the modernization work in Frankfurt’s main station, which is more than 100 years old, will continue. Construction is scheduled to take place from May 27th to August 26th. During this period, many trains will not stop at the main station, but will be diverted to the Frankfurt West or Frankfurt South stations.
Dortmund main station
Construction work is also continuing at Dortmund Central Station. The main plans are to expand the pedestrian tunnel and provide barrier-free platform access. From June 10th to December 10th, passengers must therefore be prepared for diversions, platform changes and stop cancellations.
Stuttgart main station
The major construction site in and around Stuttgart Central Station has been dragging on for years. Within the framework of “Stuttgart 21” there will be restrictions and obstructions from July 29th to September 11th – above all there will be no stops. In addition, the two-hour direct IC connection from Stuttgart to Zurich will no longer be available.

Route Hamburg-Hanover
Train passengers must expect changes to the timetable from June 6th to September 23rd on the Hamburg-Hanover route. In Hamburg, the trains regularly depart 20 minutes earlier than usual due to track work. The departure from Hanover to Hamburg is delayed by 20 minutes. In addition, trains will be diverted via Rotenburg without stopping.
This affects a particularly large number of commuters who travel this route on weekdays with the IC or ICE.

Route Fulda-Würzburg
The construction work on the route from Fulda to Würzburg is particularly extensive. The section will be renewed from June 11th to December 10th, including 20 tunnels and 16 bridges. Travelers have to plan up to 60 minutes more time due to diversions.
You should also reckon with train cancellations. The stop in Hanau and the stop at Frankfurt Central Station will be completely eliminated at times. This also affects the ICE long-distance traffic between Hamburg and Munich.
Route Osnabrück-Rheine
If you want to be on the Osnabrück-Rheine route from June 25th to August 5th, you need patience. Because a detour via Münster increases the travel time between Osnabrück and Rheine by about an hour – it normally only takes 30 minutes. The arrival and departure times of the trains also change, and the trains do not stop in Ibbenbüren.
Route Brunswick-Magdeburg
Train travelers between Braunschweig and Magdeburg must expect restrictions from October 15th to December 10th. The line will then be expanded to two tracks. There are diversions and cancellations between Wolfsburg and Göttingen and between Magdeburg and Hanover.
This applies above all to the IC that runs here and the regional trains, which are primarily used by commuters, but also to the busy IC route between Hanover and Leipzig.
