Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS that insulting remarks by US President Joe Biden to Russian President Vladimir Putin reduced the scope for negotiations.
“Each time, such personal insults narrow the window of opportunity for our bilateral relations with the current US administration. We must be aware of this,” Peskov warned.
The comment came after Biden called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “butcher.” This happened at a meeting with Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw on Saturday. Earlier, Biden called Putin a “war criminal” and a “murderer.”
Meanwhile, Moscow Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia was ready for dialogue with the United States, but only on an equal and reciprocal basis. At the moment, however, Washington is not showing such readiness, Zaharova’s official position states.
She accused Washington of hypocrisy. According to her, the United States speaks of the need to maintain relations, while at the same time hindering the full work of Russian diplomatic missions on American territory. She also warned that any hostile step by the United States would meet with a painful response from Russia. Zakharova was adamant that Washington was solely responsible for the deplorable state of bilateral relations.
