When the “Llorona” terrorized the Barrio de Londres legends culture stories chihuahua terror – El Heraldo de Chihuahua

Recorded in newspapers in 1968, the visit to the capital of Chihuahua of what is perhaps the most popular spectrum of Mexican folklore remained for posterity, when inhabitants of the neighborhoods Barrio de Londres, San Rafael and Obrera, assured that during the nights they could be heard the chilling screams of a woman crying out for her children. La Llorona, as it is known in Mexico, caused panic among the inhabitants of the sector, where some even claimed to see the specter walking the streets of those colonies.

Although tradition has adopted this being from beyond the grave as a banshee from pre-Hispanic Mexico, the truth is that the stories about demons or ghosts that terrorize the living at night come from different parts of the world, being the banshees, in Ireland, the ones that are most similar to our “Llorona”. The Irish claim that it is a kind of dark nymphs, which, according to their traditions, their cry announces the death of a person near the place where they are heard.

Well, they say that in Chihuahua, during that year of the infamous Tlatelolco massacre, the ghostly cry of “oh, my children!” It generated panic among the Chihuahuas, who at night left the streets of said sector to avoid encountering the terrifying entity from beyond the grave.

It was precisely on what used to be the San Rafael cemetery where some even claimed to have seen the dark apparition, which was described as a cadaverous-looking woman, dressed in white and whose feet did not touch the ground because it floated instead of giving Steps.

The panic was such that even the police station began to receive countless reports from that area where terrified neighbors requested the presence of police officers to investigate the origin of those horrific screams.

But even the uniformed men resisted patrolling that area after midnight, because as if it were a curfew, even stray animals disappeared from the streets, whose howls or even meows could not be heard because of the heavy atmosphere that was loomed over the colonies.

It is difficult to imagine the horror of which those people were victims, because although the current public lighting service is insufficient, at that time it was barely existent. Thick mist filled the streets and the pale glow of the moon seemed just a shy static glow in the impenetrable gloom.

The police version was then given, stating that it was about “thugs” who took advantage of the security of the night to play pranks on the settlers, however, not even they themselves dared to confirm the hypothesis.

Only with the passage of time did the rumors of the apparitions of La Llorona cease to be heard, however, newspaper clippings and stories of grandparents and parents who still remember with some suspicion that curious case have remained as evidence of the alleged apparitions. which could well be an example of mass hysteria, but there is also a record of a man who lost his mind and was admitted to a hospital after claiming to have seen La Llorona prowling the streets of the London neighborhood.
