“When I got up, the whole apartment was smoky.” Woman killed in tragic fire in Vecmīlgrāvis – Society and Politics – News

Viktors is an employee of a social service in Vecmīlgrāvis and his task is to visit weak people who need help. On Friday, September 18, at exactly 11, he came to Kreimeņu Street to meet a 48-year-old woman. Mr. Sirmais went toward her apartment until he saw an unfortunate police tape on the door. The woman was dead, but Victor did not know it yet.

“I was with her yesterday, she was home, I left her and that’s it. What are you there for? Lunch, soup, main course, salad. These are her favorites, but they are no more,” says social worker Viktors.

Victor in the stairwell emotionally says that patients have known for a long time. They were not quite friends, because the woman had a serious mental health problem and the patient did not enter into extensive conversations.

“She’s a sick person, very sick. (..) She’s still young, walking along the trash. She’s sick, she has schizophrenia. She wasn’t aggressive, she was calm, mostly drank and slept,” he states sadly, acknowledging that the woman smoked and drank, and collected bottles, and he warned the people to be careful with the gas, because when the woman smoked, a fire could break out.

The bad premonitions came true last night. Upstairs, just above the patient’s apartment, pensioner Nadezhda and her little dog Boņa live. Both were awake from sleep as they noticed anxious activity in the stairwell.

“At 3.30 I heard firefighters ringing at the door. When I got up, I felt that my whole apartment was filled with smoke. I opened the door, asked if it was burning, the firefighters asked if I was okay, I said that “All right. I asked if something was burning? They said yes, but we were still looking.

Firefighters pulled the woman’s body out of the smoked apartment. The event is scary and did not allow Nadezhda to spend a peaceful night.

“I don’t know if she felt anything or got up. She was found in the hallway. I heard that,” she says.

There is a version that the twelve-square-meter fire was caused by an unquenchable cigarette lighter that ignited the sofa. Neighbors have repeatedly written to the landlord to take the schizophrenic patient to a safer environment because she could not take care of her own safety.

Neighbors say that the deceased spent the last month in hospital, was in a nursing home for some time, but then refused to be there. According to the neighbor, it is not right to allow a sick person to make such decisions.

At 6 in the morning the operative services left Kreimeņu Street. An investigation has been launched by the police to find out the exact circumstances of the woman’s death.
