Outside catering was very well received on the first day in Würzburg. The outdoor spaces were well attended, only on the Old Main Bridge there is still peace.

Over 20 degrees and bright sunshine: the weather couldn’t have been better at the start of the outdoor dining in Würzburg. Accordingly, the tables in the city were already full at lunchtime. And the distance rule was also observed. In many restaurants there is a lot of space between the tables and the personal data of the guests have been recorded for possible follow-up. The municipal security service checked the requirements in the course of its normal operation, there were no special incidents.
Only on the Alte Mainbrücke was nothing going on. Because there is still no bridging there. Although the operators of the Alte Mainmühle and the meinwein wine bistro on the Alte Mainbrücke had submitted concepts to the city at short notice, these were not yet sufficient, said city spokesman Christian Weiß. The special feature: the innkeepers now want to set up tables on the Alte Mainbrücke. Because the bridge is also a traffic route that is used by cyclists, pedestrians and wheelchair users to cross the river, these points must also be included in the development of a concept.
Less tables, same rush
Philipp Gagel, managing director of the Alte Mainmühle, hopes for a bridging in the changed framework. Amelie Frank, head of mainwein, is also waiting for the city’s permission. “If it’s allowed, we’ll open it up,” said Frank. According to city spokesman Christian Weiß, the operators will have to be patient for a while. When the bridging pub is back will depend on how long it takes to elaborate and reexamine the concepts. The bridging pub as it was will no longer exist for the time being, but Frank is certain.

Although there were a little less tables than usual, the rush was not really smaller than usual on a sunny day at Cafe Fred on Herzogenstrasse. A few meters further down in the Trattoria Augusto there is less space for outside seats, but the tables there were separated with glass panes. No matter where you went in the city at lunchtime, you could see the same picture everywhere: well-occupied outdoor areas with reduced and spatially spaced tables.
Cushions cause stress for waiters
Many guests were already romping around at the four-tube fountain in the Fontana ice cream parlor. “It was unusual, but it works,” waiter Amanuel Ersay reports. In particular, compliance with the distance rule, the use of the toilet and the different walkways caused stress. Again and again, guests had to be prevented from moving tables. There are currently around 60 outdoor spaces in the Fontana, half as much as in normal operation.
