WhatsApp Update: Redesigning Status Update Buttons for Improved Accessibility

Techno.id – As one of the most widely used chat applications in the world, WhatsApp is constantly working to improve the application with new functionality. However, some new features tend to clash with existing ones.

Call it the Channels feature which is now placed next to Short Status updates in the Custom Updates tab. In its current form, posting a status update from this tab requires users to tap one of two floating action buttons (FABs) at the bottom right of the screen.

But an upcoming redesign could make things sleeker. As revealed by WABetaInfo, the app’s latest beta update for Android version 2.23.26.13 shows two new icons right next to the Status header.

This effectively rendered the floating button useless, and the button was removed altogether. WABetaInfo notes that WhatsApp could also be testing another redesign where the pencil and camera icons could be placed inside the three-dot menu in the top right corner.

There is some value in making some of these important buttons more accessible. For people who post a lot of Status updates every day, having these buttons at the top of the screen seems to make sense.

But since WhatsApp is also apparently experimenting with other ways to access the photo and text or sound buttons for Status updates, it’s unclear whether this version will make it to the stable version.

The two FABs at the bottom of the screen are sometimes a bit difficult to access. Some users’ fingers can accidentally tap channels in the background. So placing the button somewhere else will avoid the problem. WABetaInfo states that this new feature will be rolled out more widely to beta testers in the near future.
