WhatsApp will end support for some smartphone based on older versions of the operating system (OS) starting March 1, 2024.
In a statement on the Help Center page, WhatsApp explains that their application can only be run on certain cellphones that meet the requirements.
“Currently, we provide support and recommend the use of the following devices. Android running OS 5.0 and later,” wrote WhatsAppquoted Thursday (29/2).
Apart from that, owners of iPhone devices with operating systems below iOS 12 will also not be able to access WhatsApp.
WhatsApp explains that devices and software change frequently. Therefore, they periodically review operating systems that can be supported and make updates.
“Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices may also not have the latest security updates, or may not have the functionality needed to run WhatsApp,” WhatsApp said.
So, what happens if the operating system on the cellphone is no longer compatible?
Indirect users cannot immediately access WhatsApp. Before stopping support for the operating system, WhatsApp will notify users and remind them several times to upgrade.
“We will update this page regularly to ensure that the latest operating systems we support are listed,” he concluded.
Launch GizchinaPreviously, Android devices with Android Jelly Bean OS 4.1 or later could still access WhatsApp. However, as of March 1, 2024, WhatsApp is only compatible with devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer versions.
This update affects smartphone users with old Android OS. This means a large number of devices will no longer be able to use WhatsApp after March 1, 2024.
Users with incompatible phones will have two options, upgrade to a newer model running Android 5.0 and above, or switch to a different messaging app.
