WhatsApp limits message forwarding to one time | NOW

WhatsApp sets a new restriction on forwarding messages. If a user receives a message that has already been forwarded a lot, that message can now only be sent once more. This is evident from a blog post from WhatsApp.

The restriction is imposed to prevent the spread of disinformation. WhatsApp already did this in early 2019, since then a message could only be forwarded to a maximum of five users.

“We have seen more messages being forwarded and users are telling us that it can be overwhelming,” the blog post said. “Forwarding messages can also contribute to the spread of disinformation. We believe it is important that messages of this type are less likely to be shared, so that WhatsApp remains a place for personal conversations.”

At the end of March, WhatsApp already called on users not just messages about the corona virus forward. “Think about the messages you receive because not everything that is sent to you about the virus is correct,” the company wrote. “If you are unsure if something is true, do not forward it.”

Forwarded messages can be recognized on WhatsApp by the label with an arrow and the text ‘Forwarded’. If the label has two arrows, the message has been forwarded more than five times.
