WhatsApp gets a function to make messages disappear

In the latest update of the online messaging service WhatsApp, users will have the option to have messages automatically disappear after seven days.

The service is automatically set to ‘off’ and the user can decide whether to set it to ‘on’. The message service will delete files such as photos, videos and unread text messages after seven days. This way, among other things, storage space on the mobile phone is freed up.

Users can determine per contact whether they want to use this option, but the service only works if the conversation partner has the function turned on.

No guarantee

The capability is now available to Android users and should be available to all two billion users within weeks, WhatsApp said. People who use it don’t have to worry about all their old messages and files disappearing, said the messaging service.

The chat app warns that the recipient of messages can forward them after receipt or keep an image of them. So there is no guarantee that a message will disappear completely.

The function of the app may eventually be expanded, so that conversations can be deleted after a shorter period of time. First WhatsApp wants to see if it works.
