Nothing tragic (due to the number of teams) has therefore happened, but it is bad that Jelgava disappeared from the Latvian football super league map and it is not good that the Jurmala “Noah” team was literally removed from the distance the day before the start. This has not been the case yet – the infamous “Venta” of Kuldiga in 2005, after a scandalous almost collapse, at least spent a season (without any escape, it fell out of the heat and disappeared …). So it turns out that the new season should start with events before the first matches on the football fields.

The sudden disappearance of Armenian investors is still quite puzzling. It is said that the managers of Daugavpils “Lokomotiv”, whose team and its place in the super league were taken over by “Noah”, also helped the new owners of the club to step aside, because then they themselves – the previous managers – would have been left out and without saying. It is possible that it was probably not, it is hardly provable at all (there is no explanation from the Armenian holding yet), but in any case we will wait for the threat of Daugavpils “Lokomotiv” president Alexander Yakubovsky to be fulfilled – namely, he had guarantees for 900 thousand euros he publicly promised to sue in Lausanne and prove the corruption of the Latvian Football Federation. There is no going back after such promises. It is a pity for the footballers who were already on the team (among them also the candidates of the Latvian national team), who already participated in the training camp and test games, but now they stay in the “broken trough”. Hopefully not for long.

We like to celebrate anniversaries and therefore during this year’s championship the number 30 will be in front of our eyes – 30 years ago the first Latvian Premier League championship took place since the restoration of independence.

To draw additional attention to the tournament, it is a good move, but I hope that it will not embarrass any foreigner who will suddenly decide to look at the events of our Premier League (on the website “30”) – the first Latvian football championship took place in 1922, but the Premier League was established in 1927. This means that next year there will be two anniversaries at once – 100 years since the first championship and 95 years since the creation of the Premier League (although the number of tournaments does not correspond to these figures, because the championship was not completed in 1940, but did not take place in 1941 and 1944). Let’s not forget our football history, which also includes the Latvian SSR championships from 1945 to 1991. History may or may not like it, it may or may not be accepted, but it cannot be changed and all these almost a hundred years it has been Latvian football.

The winner of the last three years, “Riga FC”, started the “Small Jubilee” championship with a convincing victory – 3: 0 in Ventspils. However, the result does not mean that the champion had a huge advantage, because, for example, when the result was still 2: 0, Mark Kurtišs did not use a great opportunity to score a goal and reach 1: 2. Then the ending could have been different … But there is no denying that “Riga FC” was superior in general. The first goal in the new championship was scored by the first Icelandic footballer in the Latvian Premier League – 193 cm long center defender Aksels Oskars Andresons. He has already played twice for the Icelandic national team, he is only 23 years old and he hopes to prove himself in the Latvian Premier League to be in the national team again.
