What’s in the Surface Duo

May 18, 2020 –
The Suface Duo, the dual-screen smartphone from Microsoft, is in the starting blocks and is currently being tested by employees. First information on the specifications of the device has now become known.

The Surface Duo dual-screen smartphone from Microsoft is due to be released this year. Like an insider across from “Windows Central” has revealed, the device is being tested by Microsoft employees in the wild these days, which is why a little more information about the device has apparently leaked. The Surface Duo should be equipped with a Snapdragon 855 chip from Qualcomm, have 6 GB of working memory and be equipped with a storage volume of 64 or 256 GB. You won’t find 5G on the duo, however, users have to be satisfied with 4G LTE. Incidentally, the latter also seems to be the reason for using the Snapdragon 855 instead of the 865: With the 865 chip, Microsoft would have had to install a 5G modem, which would have potentially changed the entire device architecture. The use of a (single) 11 MP lens in the camera module and two AMOLED screens with a resolution of 1800 × 1350 pixels each are also known. The Surface Pen is said to be compatible with the duo screens. A battery with 3460mAh supplies the device with power and can be charged via USB-C Fast Charging.

As it goes on to say, the device will be delivered with a custom build of Android 10, but should be able to be updated quickly to version 11. The pre-installed Microsoft apps should enable interaction functions (such as drag & drop) across both screens. Time will have to show how other manufacturers’ apps adapt to the duo.

In the meantime, it is unknown whether the device will be waterproof and how Microsoft intends to approach pricing. However, it can be expected that the Surface Duo will move in the premium segment.
