What we will wear and eat in 2021

And: Which hairstyle trends are worth trying out and why the lunch break will be completely different in the future.

von Maria Zelenko, Anita Kattinger

The healthy New Year’s resolutions are easier to implement than ever thanks to a legume. The gluten-free, low-carbohydrate pulp of the carob tree could become one of the biggest superfood trends in 2021. If you want to finally conquer your weaker self, you can also turn your sports routine upside down in the new year (at least in terms of time). For now just fancy a cozy hour on the sofa? Then look for a few photos of the new hair trends online and save them on your mobile phone. The next hairdresser appointment is definitely coming.

New fashion that is positive

What percentage of the wardrobe was required in 2020? Mostly sweatpants and cuddly sweaters were used, in between at least bikini and swimming trunks attracted a little attention. In 2021, we will finally move a little closer to normal – also in terms of fashion.

In any case, the designers are going into the new year with a lot of optimism: exotic patterns make people look forward to the next vacation and puff sleeves and ruffles give the spring / summer collections a touch of romance. The general development of the fashion industry is also positive: fueled by the pandemic, according to the Fashion Report 2021 by McKinsey and the industry magazine Business of Fashion, the sustainability aspect is becoming increasingly important: for more than three out of five customers, the ecological footprint plays a major role in purchasing decisions. In response to this, circular concepts for fashion companies are increasingly no longer just a niche, but a core topic.

A mermaid’s hair

Seldom has a visit to the hairdresser been associated with so much thrill in advance as this year: Will the salon be open or will it have to close again? In 2021, hair styling will therefore be one thing above all: uncomplicated. Long-haired women can try their hand at mermaid hair, small curls that start very close to the roots. Short-haired people don’t have to keep trimming: the undone bob is cut through at the front and straight at the back.

Accurate is a thing of the past even on men’s heads. The so-called Bro Flow is celebrating its comeback. Behind it is medium-length, softly falling hair that is slightly curly. Anyone who is not naturally blessed with movement in their hair will naturally ask the hairdresser for a perm in future.

Lunchtime workouts will keep us fit

For almost a year now, countless people have been working almost exclusively from home. This continues to have an impact on the exercise routine. While people used to sweat either early in the morning or in the evening, the online sports course provider ClassPass recently recorded most logins at a completely different time: the lunch break is becoming more and more popular to do something for one’s own fitness. In 2021, the topic of home office will remain present – and the so-called lunchtime workout will probably come even more into focus. The connection between physical training and mental relaxation is becoming more and more popular: Yoga and Pilates are booming because of their sport-psychological level.

The carob returns

The older generation of our readers will still remember Bockshörndl as a gift in the Nikolaussackerl. Today, many people know the evergreen carob tree (also Bockshörndl, Karuben or Karobbaum) with its purple-brown twisted legumes from their holidays on the Mediterranean. The nutritious pulp can be eaten fresh, dried or ground: the taste of the legumes with their fruity, caramel-like aromas is particularly reminiscent of cocoa.

In the food industry, carob is used as a thickener (E410) because of its water-binding properties. So what’s new? Marketing as a vegan, gluten-free, low-carbohydrate superfood is still ahead of us.

Okonomiyaki – or whatever you want

The name of the Japanese dish means “roast what you want”: Okonomiyaki is a cross between omelette and spicy pancakes. The basic ingredients are eggs, flour, water, white cabbage and dashi, a fish stock. All ingredients – depending on your preference and taste – are mixed in a bowl and then emptied on the Japanese table grill Teppan and baked on both sides to a kind of pancake.

It is served with ginger, mayonnaise and a special sauce. Anyone who can still remember the hype surrounding the Japanese noodle soup ramen would like to believe that we will soon be ordering the Japanese pancakes as a quick lunch.
