What kind of aging are you?

Nobody can stop him from getting old. But he can influence how quickly this happens through his lifestyle. You can see that at class reunions, for example. Some of the former classmates are noticeably struggling with health problems, others are in excellent shape and look 15 years younger than chronologically.

Stanford University School of Medicine geneticist Michael Snyder has studied the phenomenon on a biochemical level – and found that there are at least four different ways the body will change over the decades. These “aging types” (“ageotypes” in English) are each associated with a certain body process or organ, namely the metabolism, the immune system, the liver or the kidneys. This knowledge could enable a prognosis about how the aging of the individual will develop – and how he or she could specifically counteract this process.

So the division is more than a label, says Snyder. It could “help individuals identify health risk factors and identify areas where they are most likely to have problems later”.
