Western Norway Disappointed as Snow Melts Away – White Christmas Guarantee Elsewhere

Those who had hoped for a white Christmas in Western Norway must be disappointed. In Bergen, the snow is about to disappear.

– There are many people who are upset about it. In Bergen it has been a real winter atmosphere, they are not that used to it, says on-duty meteorologist Terje Alsvik Walløe to Dagbladet.

In Western Norway and along the Southern coast, it will be rain and plus temperatures throughout the day.

– It will be boring Christmas weather, explains Walløe.

But even if it will be plus degrees, it is wise to be aware of challenging driving conditions. The rain falls on cold roads, which can make it extra slippery.

Several of the towns along the coast in the south and west will experience the same Christmas weather. In Kristiansand and Stavanger there will be plus temperatures, which can lead to melting snow and slushy conditions.

Guarantees a white Christmas

However, the gloomy forecasts only apply to Western Norway and along the Sørland coast. Walløe can announce that it will be a white Christmas in the rest of the country.

– It will be a white Christmas for sure. In Eastern Norway, it will be classic winter weather with small amounts of snow and minus temperatures, he says.

In the Oslo area, it does not get warmer than minus five degrees. From the capital and northwards, the meteorologist guarantees minus degrees for the rest of the year.

Snow is also expected in Møre and Romsdal on Sunday afternoon. In Trøndelag and Nordland, precipitation is avoided, and temperatures will remain low.

– It will be lingering weather, explains Walløe.

There, too, you can expect a white Christmas.

Clear invitation: – Follow along

In Troms and Finnmark, gales, snow and snowdrifts on the roads can lead to challenging driving conditions.

– It is blowing and snowing at the same time, says the meteorologist.

Affected by power outages

The weather in Western Norway can present more problems than slippery roads on Sunday.

1,135 customers are affected by a power outage in Vaksdal and Osterøy on Sunday, BKK reports. The power outage occurred in Osterøy at 09.22, and at 09.51 in Vaksdal, according to BKK’s own website.

At 10.39 am, 1113 customers are affected by a power cut in Vaksdal and on Osterøy on Sunday, reports BKK.

They expect the problems to be resolved at 12:30 and 1:00 p.m.

The power outage is related to the weather, says press contact at BKK, Rolf Sanne-Gundersen.

– We have had many power cuts for several days now. It has been because of the weather. Heavy rainfall, snow and wind, he tells Dagbladet.

He says that they still have problems today, and that it has caused more errors on their lines.

– We are working hard with the crews outside to get the power back on as soon as possible.

He adds that he fully understands that it is boring for those without electricity on Christmas Eve itself.

– We just have to regret that, but we don’t control the weather.

– Be careful

There are reports of slippery roads on the E18 in Arendal. The reason is freezing rain.

– The police ask everyone to adjust their speed and drive according to the conditions, the police write on X.

Driving conditions are also challenging in Vestland county.

– We have gone from having a lovely white Christmas, to a low pressure with rain and plus temperatures. When it is combined with frost on the road, it becomes challenging driving conditions, says traffic operator Jørgen Bødtker to Dagbladet.

– Contaminates us to colder climates

At 08.50, the problems apply mainly to the west of Bergen, but according to the traffic operator, the problems will extend further into the country during the morning. Thus, the challenges do not seem to be going away anytime soon.

Bødtker points out that if you are out on a Christmas visit or to church, the driving conditions can change significantly from the time you arrive to the time you return home.

– Be careful on the slippery surface. Allow plenty of time and drive according to the conditions, he urges.

– The contractors are doing everything they can. The challenge is that the rain washes away the salt so that there is ice on the road, Bødtker explains.
