The legislator of West Virginia on Tuesday it passed a bill to ban almost all abortions, making it so the second state to approve a new ban on the right to abortion since the Supreme Court quashed Roe vs Wade in June.

According to the legislation, victims of rape and incest could have an abortion for up to eight weeks of pregnancy, but only if they first report it to the police. Those victims, if minors, would have up to 14 weeks to terminate a pregnancy and they should inform the police or a doctor. Police reports must also be notarized.

Abortion would also be allowed in case of medical emergencies.

The state Senate passed the bill with 22-7, after a brief debate on Tuesday afternoon. The House of Representatives passed and passed Bill 78-17. West Virginia’s new abortion ban will take effect 90 days after approval.

Abortions are legal in the state’s only abortion clinic for up to 20 weeks after fertilization, until this new law comes into effect.

The ACLU accused the law of passing the state legislature: “West Virginia just passed a total ban on abortion with few exceptions. If it becomes law, West Virginia would become the second state to ban abortion after Dobbs’ decision.
We will never, ever stop fighting for our right to abortion ”.

House Republicans of West Virginia have pushed forward the state’s strict abortion ban despite signs that many voters in other parts of the country do not support the Supreme Court ruling and are largely opposed to stricter restrictions on abortion. .

The bill now goes to the Republican governor’s desk Jim Justice. The governor has indicated that he will probably sign it, making it happen a law that will tighten state restrictions on abortion.

Indiana was the first state to pass a restrictive abortion law after Roe v. Wade was overturned, and he did so during a special legislative session.
