West Ham ‘agree club record transfer’ for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez

West Ham have agreed a club record fee for Darwin Nunez but face a battle against time to formally sign the Benfica star.

The Hammers are pushing hard ahead of tonight’s deadline, which ends at 11 pm, while personal terms have yet to be agreed.

Logistically, the East London side have a problem on their hands with the 22-year-old currently on international duty with Uruguay.

South American countries are out of international duty while La Celeste faces Venezuela, making negotiations difficult.

But David Moyes is not giving up after making a striker a priority in this transfer window, with Sky Sports reporting an agreement has been reached with Benfica on a fee.

Nunez would love to play in the Premier League and has been in top form this campaign, scoring 20 times in 25 games and could cost up to £50m.

That would be a club record for West Ham, whose main purchase remains Sebastian Haller, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt for £45m in 2019.

However, the Hammers have money to burn and have been trying to splurge before the end of the month with plenty of interest throughout the Premier League.

A late offer for Leeds United star Raphinha was considered, only for Los Blancos to reject any interest until the summer at least.

And their other main man was also targeted in the form of Kalvin Phillips with £50m offers being prepared for both of them before the Elland Road outfit told them they had no chance.

Whether that indicates concerns about whether they can keep Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen remains to be seen, as the pair are linked with the best moves.

But one area on the pitch that Moyes is desperate to strengthen is up front, where Michail Antonio has been used more as an assistant striker during his time there recently.

West Ham are not putting all their eggs in Nunez’s basket, however, he is the main target and Hugo Ekitike is also in their sights.

Newcastle are also in the running for the 22-year-old and a £25m offer could be enough to tempt Reims to sell, while Toulouse star Rhys Healey is also in the sights.
