Marko defends Horner’s rivalry with Wolff: ‘As long as it’s not below the belt’

According to Helmut Marko, there is nothing wrong with the mutual competition between team bosses Toto Wolff and Christian Horner this season. However, the Austrian warns that the two must keep it within limits.

Red Bull Racing on Mercedes have been very evenly matched this season. With two races to go Max Verstappen an eight point lead over Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes has a five-point lead over Red Bull Racing in the Constructors’ Championship. The two teams are thus engaged in a blood-curdling battle, which will probably not be decided until the last race of the season.

This naturally creates a fierce rivalry. This rivalry is of course fought out on the track in the first place, but also off the tarmac there are regular blows dealt. One time Wolff makes a sneer at Red Bull, after which Horner bounces the ball back to Mercedes. It has now become a very political battle game, which not everyone is happy with. Johnny Herbert, for example, already let it be known that he found the behavior of the two team bosses extremely childish and that he would like the two gentlemen to adopt a more mature attitude.

However, according to Red Bull adviser Marko, it is only natural that there is such a fierce rivalry between the two teams. “As long as it is not below the belt, that is also part of it in my view,” the Austrian tells Motorsport.com. “Of course you support your own driver and yes, with that you discredit the opponent to a certain extent.” However, he does add a comment: “Well, that is logical in itself, as long as it stays within limits.”
