Striker Timo Werner ended his four-year engagement in Leipzig in the best possible way. In the final 34th round of the German league, he decided with two goals to win 2: 1 in Augsburg and before leaving for Chelsea, with 95 hits, he became the leader of the table of the best shooters in the club’s history. Thanks to its 28 Bundesliga goals, Leipzig finished the year in third place.
Before Saturday’s match, Werner shared first place with Daniel Frahn with 93 goals. Unlike Werner, however, he played for Leipzig only in lower competitions. “Above all, I’m very happy that we ended the season with a win and qualified for the Champions League. The season turned out well. I’m proud to be the best scorer in the history of Leipzig,” said a teammate of the Czech representative Patrik Schick.
Twenty-four-year-old Werner came to the Saxon club in 2016 from his native Stuttgart. “I had a great time in Leipzig, I felt great all those years too. And that was why I achieved such performances. Another was the team that always stood behind me.” said the German representative.
Only Robert Lewandowski of the Bayern Munich championship scored better among the gunners in the Bundesliga season, scoring 34 goals. However, thanks to 17 outdoor goals, Werner managed to equal the record of Jupp Heynckes from the year 1973/74.
According to his teammate Emil Forsberg, Werner could not do anything better. “It’s really great that Timo scored twice in the last game. It’s a good end to his successful era here,” stated the 28-year-old Swede. “Timo will leave a big gap behind. I wish him all the best in London, let him continue to succeed there,” said coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Werner’s departure for Chelsea was confirmed last week, the clubs did not announce the price. Werner’s exit clause was 60 million euros (almost 1.6 billion crowns), which makes him the most expensive German footballer. He will join the “Blues” in July and will not help Leipzig in August when the Champions League restarts.
