Weinstein will pay off. Why do his victims consider this a betrayal?

In February, Weinstein was convicted by a court of sexual offenses

Harvey Weinstein’s bankrupt company agreed to pay nearly $ 19 million to women who accused him of sexual assault, the New York State Attorney General said.

Weinstein himself has already been convicted and is in prison. In March of this year, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and other crimes of a sexual nature against two women.

The current compensation agreement was the result of another lawsuit filed by New York City Prosecutors in 2018 against Weinstein, his brother and Weinstein Company. It also completes another lawsuit: a class action lawsuit filed in 2017 on behalf of nine women who accused a movie mogul of harassment.

“After all these persecutions, threats and discrimination of survivors, all this finally awaits at least some justice,” said New York Attorney General Letizia James.

“Full betrayal”

However, the lawyers of the six women accusing Weinstein are protesting against the compensation decision. They called him a complete betrayal of the principle of justice.

“The proposed settlement is a complete betrayal of Weinstein’s victims, and we are surprised that the Attorney General can somehow boast of this agreement, which is in many ways disastrous,” said lawyers for the victims Douglas Wigdor and Kevin Mintzer.

Lawyers say the agreement does not require Harvey Weinstein to plead guilty, and he does not have to pay compensation out of his own pocket. Instead, the insurance company will pay the money.

The other victims of Weinstein look at the agreement differently.

“There is no money that could compensate for this injustice, but I am extremely proud of what I’ve achieved,” said former actress and playwright Luzette Gays, who also accused the director of sexual violence.

Compensation

Compensation agreement for women has yet to be approved by the US federal court, as well as the court considering his bankruptcy.

Under the agreement of the Weinstein Company with the New York State Attorney’s Office, all women who in the past were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements on the details of the charges can now openly talk about past events.

If the deal with Weinstein is finally approved, his victims will be able to receive compensation in the amount of 7.5 thousand to 750 thousand dollars.
