Weinstein transferred from New York to California to stand trial

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Former US film producer Harvey Weinstein was transferred from New York to California on Tuesday to stand trial on charges of rape and sexual assault, spokesman for the ex -magnat of Hollywood and the New York prison authority.

Harvey Weinstein, 69, was indicted last year by the Los Angeles prosecution on charges of rape and sexual assault against five women between 2004 and 2013.

The one who has produced successful and Oscar-winning films like “The English Patient” or “Shakespeare in Love” was convicted of rape and sexual assault in a trial in New York and sentenced in March 2020 to 23 years’ imprisonment.

Harvey Weinstein denies having had non-consensual sex with anyone and has appealed his conviction in New York. He considers that he was not entitled to a fair trial, denouncing the partiality of the jury.

Citing multiple health problems, Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers had striven to prevent the transfer of their client to California.

“We are going to fight so that Harvey can receive the medical care he needs and, of course, that he is treated fairly. Due process, the presumption of innocence and a fair trial are always his rights,” he said. Former producer spokesperson Juda Engelmayer said in a statement.
