Weil’s disease has surfaced in Nickerie. A life has been claimed, and people have ended up in intensive care. The Mungra Medical Center has a medium-care room. Patients are therefore sent to Paramaribo when necessary. Now that is also the case with the outbreak of this disease. The internist of the regional hospital Carlos Hernandez says the number of infections is rising.
In Weil’s disease, which can cause multiple complications, 24 hours of care is a necessity. “That’s why we prefer to send the patients to the AZP,” says internist Carlos Hernandez.
Weil’s disease occurs in rat feces and urine. When people and dogs come into contact with it, they can become infected. Successful treatment is possible if the disease is detected in time. “The sooner you get there, the better.”
The disease is accompanied by fever, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea and body aches. If diagnosed early, Weil’s disease can be treated with antibiotics. Vaccinations can also offer a solution. Hernandez calls for the disease to be slowed down with a prevention program and drugs.
