At the weekend, the weather in Germany is still early summer, but from Monday it gets significantly colder. Even snowfall and frost are possible.
On time for the Ice saints from Monday the temperatures will be cool again and almost wintry. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts a drop in temperature for Monday. “Snowfalls in southern Germany are likely to be possible in lower altitudes. Frost and ground frost will also be an issue again temporarily,” says the DWD forecast on Friday. The 20-degree mark is therefore only exceeded in the extreme southeast of Bavaria. 9 to 14 degrees are the rule.
The cold front coincided with the first day of the so-called ice saints. “This is more of a coincidence,” says meteorologist Jens Hoffmann. Cold temperatures on the days of the Ice Saints in mid-May (11 to 15 May: Mamertus, Pankratius, Servatius, Bonifatius and Sophia) were not the rule, rather a general warning: “Be careful with plants, it can get colder in May.”
Severe rain and cold
The weekend is forecast to be warm, but volatile. On Saturday it is cloudy and partly rainy with thunderstorms. From Sunday, according to the DWD, storm-like rain with around 25 liters per square meter can be expected in a short time. Northwest Germany is spared from the thunderstorms, but not from the cold: A maximum of 15 degrees is expected at the North Sea.
“A cold front moves over Germany on Monday and reaches the Alps in the evening,” says DWD meteorologist Marco Manitta. “Then when the cold air draws in, the snow line drops.” The rain freezes from Saarland to Niederlausitz above 700 meters increasingly to white flakes. “It could be that the higher elevations of the low mountain ranges turn white for a moment.”
On the night of Tuesday, the cold air also reaches the south of Germany: “There is a drop in temperature, before that we have summer and it is almost wintry at night,” says the meteorologist. “If it clears up, there is a risk of frost all over Germany.”
The nights remained cold, but the temperatures rose again. From Wednesday the summer temperatures are slowly coming back.
