we administer the vaccine in empty cinemas and theaters – Corriere.it

The announcement was made Also in Italy. By the end of January, 3.4 million doses of the vaccine will be available and then millions more will follow. And so we took the first step. If we want to be super optimistic, we will see the first immune subjects around the beginning of March. Having a vaccine that works and exists in sufficient quantity to cover the priority population groups is already a great deal but unique and essential requirement for starting a long journey. In addition to the non-marginal problem of the no-vax, we will have to face that of the deniers which is new and I fear much more complex. But now it is urgent that it be understood that we are about to undertake – and not only in Italy – the largest and most complicated vaccination campaign ever faced by mankind.

The experts agree: the use of the vaccine will be one of the tools that will accelerate the exit from this pandemic phenomenon and therefore we must be effective and reach the goal within the established time frame. That is, we need to immunize certain categories of people as soon as possible, including healthcare workers and essential workers, people at risk of developing the severe form.

There is a lot of talk today about the stability of vaccines and their conservation which are two crucial points in this herculean process that certainly will not be accomplished without bitter controversies and even bizarre incidents. What we know for sure that a poorly stored vaccine or one that hasn’t respected the cold chain could be ineffective. There is therefore a real problem of distribution and storage at low temperatures with considerable logistical complexity, in the sense that to transport, store and manage vaccines at low or very low temperatures we need an infrastructure that currently does not exist in any country.

Vieppi. It may happen that due to the urgency some of these vaccines will be marketed in multi-dose packs. So, with a surprising leap, let’s go back decades to how it was done in the era before the single-dose-ready-to-use syringes. In the past – not so far away – many children were vaccinated from a vaccine bottle. If confirmed to us, this it would mean that from a single vial or package of thawed vaccine more people have to be vaccinated on the same day, and that consequently it is necessary to manage the flow of those people in a spaced way and which also allows the handling of some formalities. It seems clear to me that we need to set up aids to manage vaccination operations and that we need to think about it in time.

An unexpected convergence could be found with a view to optimizing resources and with the spirit of supporting one of the sectors that have suffered most and will suffer most in the coming months. The one of virtuously bringing together two substantially disjoint parallel and independent sectors: that of public health and that of entertainment. In honor and in memory of the women and men of the show who have flown away, why not explore a vaccine distribution and administration plan that takes advantage of today’s empty cinemas and theaters which – come to think of it – would be particularly functional to this type of activity. They are at a loss, and it is unlikely that they will return to work until the contagion situation is under control.

There is already a controlled entry mode with one-way path to the exit. There is enough electricity for a -70 freezer and other equipment, there are services, there are escape routes. Vaccinates could sit in a pattern that respects spacing, and in the meantime it would be easier for health workers to do their job, precisely by exploiting an orderly situation of operations management.

These CineVaxes could also then be used for the recovery of pediatric vaccinations that have been skipped due to the emergency. Maybe who knows, with a bit of technology you might even be able to show a short film or listen to music to make this very complicated and disturbing passage a little more painless.
