Wave of Shootings Targeting Arab Minority in Israel: 5 People Killed

Jakarta

Police say five people were killed in shootings in a wave of crimes against the Arab minority in Israel north. The victims were three men and two women.

Reported by AFP, Thursday (28/9/2023), police in a statement said three men and two women were shot dead in the Bedouin town of Basmat Tabun, northwest of Nazareth.

Police provided few details about the shooting. Because the police were looking for the attackers.

The attack came hours after a man in the nearby city of Haifa was shot dead. Local media said the victim was identified as Arab Israel.

The death on Wednesday (27/9) local time brings the number of Arab-Israelis killed so far this year to 188 people. This is according to the Abraham Initiative organization which promotes coexistence between Arabs and Jews.

“The Prime Minister must fire the Minister of Public Security and immediately draw up a plan to tackle criminality in Arab society. This is an emergency,” the organization said in a statement.

Arab citizens of Israel, descendants of Palestinians who lived on their land after the founding of the state of Israel in 1948, make up about 20 percent of the country’s 9.7 million population.

Experts say Arab gangs have amassed large numbers of illegal weapons over the past two decades and are involved in drug crimes and other crimes.

Many people in the community say they are discriminated against by the Jewish majority and accuse the Israeli government of failing to properly investigate the violence.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this month that Israel was engaged in ‘a real war against serious crimes in the Arab sector’.

Violence does not differentiate between men and women, young and old, ordinary citizens and elected officials, candidates or council chairs, he said.
