Wave of anti-Asian attacks | New York police search for assailant of Asian woman

Police are calling the incident on Tuesday a hate crime.

Authorities described the suspect as a dark-skinned man, aged 50 to 55, measuring around 1.8 meters and weighing around 68 kilograms. When he was last seen, he was wearing a dark camouflage sweater, black sweatpants, and black sandals. Police said he was wearing a black sock on his left foot and a white sock on his right foot.

The woman and her three children were passengers on a train set headed for Times Square on Tuesday afternoon. A man shouted anti-Asian slurs at them. He spat twice in the mother’s direction before dropping his cell phone, police said. The man then threw the device through the back door of the car before fleeing on the 41^e West Street, authorities said.

The woman was taken to a hospital for observation, they added.

The attack is another example of the surge in anti-Asian racism in the United States. In New York, near Times Square, a 65-year-old Filipino American was violently assaulted on her way to a church. A man on parole after being convicted of murdering his mother two decades ago has been charged with assault and attempted assault in a hate crime.
