Wanted man shot by police during arrest – VG

After being on the run from the police for almost a day, a wanted 51-year-old was arrested by the police on Monday night. In connection with the arrest, the man was shot in the leg.

– Around 23.00 on Monday night, the police received an observation of the wanted man on Hægeland and went into action, says chief of staff in the Agder police district, Morten Sjustøl in a press release.

– The special unit is routinely notified. The injured man has been taken to hospital. He should not be life-threateningly injured, Morten Sjustøl continues.

Violence and deprivation of liberty

On Sunday night, the police were notified of an incident in Mandal around 9 pm. The man had then taken the woman in her 30s with her, against her will, with whom he had previously had a relationship.

After a few hours of searching, the police arrived at an address in Hægeland. There was a confrontation between the perpetrator and the police. VG receives confirmation from several sources that the man is said to have sought out an acquaintance, who asked him to leave the place.

Police fired a warning shot, but the perpetrator fled on foot. The man had a sawn-off shotgun with him, but did not shoot back.

The offended woman was found at the address, and was described as badly beaten and has possible fractures. She is receiving treatment at Sørlandet hospital.

Assistance from Oslo

The search for the man took place in a forest in Hægeland in Vennesla municipality. The police have had eye contact with the man several times and have fired warning shots, without being able to get control of him.

On Monday afternoon, the police ended the search in a specific forest area on Hægeland. However, the search continued elsewhere.

– The search for the man continues, without us wanting to be specific on where we want to apply, said the staff in the Agder police district in a press release.

National aid resources from Oslo through the emergency squad, the crisis and hostage dealer service and the helicopter service contributed to the search on Monday.

Previously convicted

As recently as May this year, the man was sentenced to eight months in prison for several violations of the Road Traffic Act and driving while intoxicated. The man also has several sentences from Kristiansand District Court related to drugs and intoxication.

According to the local newspaper Vennesla Tidende The man has also in a previous case been involved in armed action with the police. According to the newspaper, the affair took place back in 2016 when the man was involved in a traffic accident and fled the scene. The man had then been on the run from prison for some time.
