Want to play a lot of games during the autumn holidays? These are some toppers | Games

GamesAn extended autumn break, but you have nowhere to go: if there ever was a good excuse to play a lot, then now. Our tech editor went looking for games that are also tough, with story campaigns lasting 30 hours or more.

Watch Dogs: Legion

We start with some technological dystopia – in keeping with the spirit of the times -: in Watch Dogs: Legion wander around in a future London and set up a hacker revolution against an authoritarian government. The gameplay builds on that of the previous two Watch Dogs games (from 2014 and 2016). It is an open world game in an urban setting (akin to say Grand Theft Auto), and as a player you gain super powers by hacking all the electronics in your environment with your smartphone. By the way, there is no main character: you put together a team of hacker rebels, who you can choose from the entire population of the city. Watch Watch Dogs: Legion here.

Ghost of Tsushima

Mix one of the more recent Assassin’s Creedgames with the films of Japanese grandmaster Akira Kurosawa, and the result is something like Ghost of Tsushima. A piece of history: When the Mongol Empire tried to invade Japan in the thirteenth century, a small troop of several dozen samurai stopped Kublai Khan’s bloodthirsty horde on the island of Tsushima. In this PS4 game you take on the role of one of those samurai. The virtual natural beauty is impressive, the action brutal and at the same time also poetic. The latter will soon become clear to you when you notice that the wind plays a role in the gameplay. Watch Ghost of Tsushima here.

Desperados III

This rather neglected kid is one of the best games of the year, and you probably haven’t even noticed its release. It is a tactical game in a western setting, in which you as bounty hunter John Cooper and his posse can take a limited number of steps within an environment full of enemies. You can always go full on the attack, but usually it is wiser to sneak cautiously and only strike when all enemies are covered by members of your gang. The game has very detailed environments, and there are always multiple ways to achieve the same goal. Watch Desperados III here.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Okay, we know: this PS clapper is now three years old. Still, there are good reasons to remind yourself of its existence. The version for PC has just been released. Successor Horizon: Forbidden West will likely get a release for PS5 next year, so it’s a good time to start playing with this one already. In any case, it is never a punishment to wander again in this world populated by robot dinosaurs. Watch Horizon: Zero Dawn here.

Red Dead Redemption II

Do you want to believe that Red Dead Redemption II, that unlikely classic of a western game, is now two years old? Not that it matters that much, because it is still a joy to play. With a central storyline, which is a western classic in itself, and which lasts about 45 hours. Then you will be presented with an epilogue of 10 to 15 hours, the length of many other games. Then you are busy for a few tens of hours exploring all corners of the game world. And then, finally, there is one more Red Dead Online, in which you play a self-made outlaw and compete with other gamers. Watch Red Dead Redemption II here.

Cyberpunk 2077

To be honest, you have to wait a little longer – until mid-November, to be precise – but we already promise it will be worth the wait. The demos that we could already play promise a sweltering role-play. Cyberpunk 2077 takes place – even if – in a world where technological progress has not exactly brought out the best in humanity, but you might be happier to know that none other than Keanu Reeves is your guide as the musical rebel Johnny Silverhand. Expect an enormously wide range of choices and an intriguing story lasting tens of hours. Watch Cyberpunk 2077 here.
