A fire broke out in Wan Chai! Today (December 1) at 3:47 am, a unit on the sixth floor of the Jinle Building, 275-277 Lockhart Road caught fire. Firefighters arrived at the scene and activated 1 hose and sent 2 teams of smoking caps to put out the fire and installed a ladder to shoot water at the fire scene. During the incident, 13 residents they were evacuated on their own and 14 residents were evacuated from the building by firefighters. A female resident was unwell from smoke inhalation and, after being treated by the ambulance men, she did not need to be admitted to hospital.
Firefighters put out the fire at 4.55am and an 80-year-old resident was found in the unit where the fire started, who was taken to hospital by ambulances and was certified dead. Later, the charred corpse of a 30-year-old man was found in the unit. Firefighters carried the body along the building and placed it on the sidewalk. The police covered the body with a curtain. Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire accident. According to neighbors, the two deceased were a father and son, who lived together in the unit where the fire started. According to reports at the scene, the burned son had a sharp knife lodged in his chest, and police are investigating the case.
During the fire alarm, Mr. Ou, a resident on the 7th floor, said he was sleeping when the accident happened and was suddenly awakened by thick smoke. Affected by the incident, the fore and aft lanes of Lockhart Road between Stewart Road and Durnos Road are to be temporarily closed.
