Governor Markus Wallner would like to make up for the Vorarlberg municipal and mayor elections canceled as a result of the Corona crisis, if possible this year.
The original election date was March 15th. The country’s legal department has been commissioned to review the deadlines for various scenarios, Wallner said in a video press conference on Wednesday evening.

Too early to make a decision
As soon as this review was completed, they would consider “when a possible election day could be,” said Wallner. The community association is also involved in these discussions. In and of itself, it is still too early to make a decision, because you only have to wait and see how the infection numbers develop over the next few weeks.

Don’t put off elections for too long
Wallner explicitly pointed out the danger of a second wave of infection. In any case, the goal is to hold the elections in 2020. “I am in favor of the elections not being delayed too long,” he emphasized. According to Wallner, the freestyle of the municipal councils and mayors only in spring 2021 – which would enable the state constitution – “is the worst possible solution”.
