Wages of Farm Workers and Construction Workers Are Stagnant in September 2020

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted labor wages peasants and building workers edged up or tends to be stagnant in September 2020 compared to August 2020.

Head of BPS, Suhariyanto, revealed wages farm workers in September 2020 amounting to IDR 55,718 / day from IDR 55,677. The increase tended to be flat, only 0.08 percent.

“But because this month there was a deflation of 0.07 percent, the real wages of farm laborers increased slightly by 0.15 percent. The purchasing power of farm workers in September was relatively well maintained,” Suhariyanto said in a video conference on Thursday (15/10/2020).

Suhariyanto stated that the wages of construction workers have also increased. The increase was 0.98 percent compared to August 2020, from IDR 89,872 to IDR 90,753 / day.

He said, because this September CPI deflation was 0.05 percent, the real wages of construction workers in September increased by 1.03 percent.

“This means that from the wages of agricultural workers and construction workers (in September 2020), the purchasing power is still relatively the same compared to last month’s position,” said Suhariyanto.

For information, the nominal wage of a worker / worker is the average daily wage that a worker receives in return for work that has been done.

The real wage of a worker / worker describes the purchasing power of the income / wages that the worker / worker receives.

The real wage for agricultural labor is the ratio between the nominal wage of agricultural laborers and the index for rural household consumption, while the real wage for construction workers is the ratio of the nominal wage for construction workers to the urban consumer price index.
