Rockstar has acquired the Crackdown 2 studio

Rumors of Rockstar’s acquisition of Scottish developer Ruffian Games were officially confirmed this week. In a press release, Rockstar owner Take-Two says that the purchase has been completed, but no price was announced.

Ruffian – originally founded in 2008 – is best known for his work with Crackdown 2, and has also helped Microsoft on projects such as Halo: Reach and Crackdown 3. Exactly what the team will do at Rockstar is currently unknown, but co-founder Billy Thompson has high hopes for the collaboration.

– We are incredibly excited to join the Rockstar team. Not only do we get the opportunity to work with some of the most successful entertainment products in the world, but Rockstar’s investment in our studio is a great sign for further development of game development here in Scotland.

With the purchase, the studio changes its name from Ruffian to Rockstar Dundee, after the studio’s offices in Dundee, Scotland. Otherwise, things continue as before, with Thompson and co-founder number two, Gary Liddon, behind the wheel.
