The new rail freight transport division, which the Baden-Württemberg Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association (VSL) is now offering to its members, is intended as a platform for information and exchange on the subject of intermodal transport. Around 20 VSL members took part in founding the new division. According to its own information, the association wants to play an even more active role in the future in order to enable its member companies to use rail. The internal platform takes into account the increasing interest in combined transport.

GDL strikes make modal shift more difficult

“For less traffic jams on the roads and more climate protection, we have to put more goods on the train,” says VSL President Dr. Micha Lege. However, as a driver of the mobility transition, the railway still has a lot of room for improvement; Current problems include poor construction site management, long delays and missing or insufficient information. The strikes by the train drivers’ union GDL are also making the shift to rail more difficult.

VSL round table for rail in the southwest

According to VSL managing director Andrea Marongiu, in addition to planning and real-time information, the industry also needs a modern and digital rail infrastructure: “It is the basis for quality and punctuality,” he says. For the industry, when the division was founded, he announced a round table for rail for Baden-Württemberg, at which all relevant players, including those from the shipping industry, would like to identify the current problems and develop approaches to solutions.

NVBW and DSLV are involved

The opening event in Stuttgart was attended by interested parties from a wide range of areas relating to rail transport, such as freight forwarders who are interested in rail or who already transport goods on it, terminal operators, railway companies and operators in combined transport (CT). The freight transport competence center of the Baden-Württemberg local transport company (NVBW) was also there. It supports companies from the southwest that are interested in rail with funding for initial consultation. The deputy managing director Niels Beuck was there for the DSLV Federal Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics.
