VRT deletes 18-year-old episode FC De Kampioenen for racist jokes | NOW

The VRT offers an episode of FC the champions from 2002 will no longer be online and will not be retransmitted. The Belgian broadcaster finds the jokes about a black character condescending, inappropriate and no longer appropriate for the current zeitgeist, reports VRT News Monday.

In the episode room for rent from 2002 Dieudonné is often the target of condescending jokes about his skin color. “That negro can not be trusted upside down,” says the character Fernand, for example, about the man from Cameroon. Pascale character dances in African clothing with bananas on his head.

“Older programs are now being screened,” said a VRT spokesperson about the decision to stop offering the episode of the comedy series about a poorly performing football team. “The episode will remain in the VRT archive. We will not erase history.”

FC the champions was shown from 1990 to 2011 and, in addition to four feature films, received a Dutch remake in 1994 entitled De Victorie. An extra season of the Flemish comedy series planned for 2021 is in jeopardy after the death of cast member Johny Voners in March of this year.
