Volunteers pick up corpses from house to house, Myanmar is predicted to be the fastest spreading country for Covid-19

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, YANGON – United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on Human Rights (HAM) of Myanmar warned last week that the country was at risk of ‘becoming a super-spreading nation’ corona virus (Covid-19).

On Monday, the United Nations Country Team in Myanmar also said that a new wave of infections could be catastrophic for the country of 54 million people.

“Plague Covid-19 currently predicted to have devastating consequences for the health of the population and the economy,” the team said in a statement.

Please note that currently in Myanmar, medical volunteers are reportedly ‘going door to door’ to collect the death toll, including in Yangon, the nation’s capital.

“Every day my team collects between 30 and 40 bodies, I think other teams will be like us. Sometimes, we find two bodies in one house,” said one of the volunteers, Than Than Soe.

Meanwhile, most of the hospitals all over Myanmar empty, no doctors and patients there.

This is because of their long-term strike against military generals who seized power in the government since last February.

Widespread anger at the coup and fear of cooperating with the military are also thought to have driven the majority of the public away from military-run hospitals.

Quoted from the Al Jazeera page, Tuesday (20/7/2021), this phenomenon certainly makes many residents who are dying of oxygen run out and even die at home.

The volunteers are now busy looking for oxygen and carrying the dead from house to house to be cremated.

At its latest count, the country had reported about 230,000 cases Covid-19 and at least 5,000 deaths.

But observers say the real number may well exceed the reported figure, as many of the deaths have occurred at home.

Last week, the military asked doctors and nurses to volunteer in the handling effort Covid-19.

Because they claim to face ‘difficulty’ in controlling the spike in new cases.

State media reported on Saturday that authorities were urgently seeking oxygen supplies from neighboring countries such as Thailand and China.
