Volkswagen sales are plummeting – this is what the importer answers

Volkswagen has been at the top of sales in new car sales in Norway for a lifetime.

Last year was no exception. Volkswagen topped the lists with just over 19,000 cars sold. The new electric car ID.3 was a good contributor, with just over 7,700 deliveries in a few months.

But now the picture has changed drastically.

Top 10 car brands, January 2021:

  1. Toyota
  2. BMW
  3. Volvo
  4. Audi
  5. Peugeot
  6. Mercedes-Benz
  7. Volkswagen
  8. Polestar
  9. That
  10. Nissan

In the first month of the year, Volkswagen sales fell by as much as 46 percent, compared with the same period last year.

It shows recent figures from the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

Sudden stop for ID.3

New ID.3 goes from the top position in 2020 – to not being visible on the top 20 list of new car sales in January this year.

That Volkswagen does not have a single model on this list has hardly happened earlier in history.

The figures from OFV also show that Volkswagen’s total new car sales in January are 537 cars.

Thus, Volkswagen is down to a seventh place in the registration statistics.

Transition phase

It is no secret that there have been some problems and childhood diseases with ID.3.

A number of customers have reported errors. These are mainly linked to the car’s software. Here, a major update will probably solve the challenges.

To Motor.no, the Norwegian Volkswagen importer explains the weak figures in January by saying that the launch model of ID.3 is nearing completion.

– We are now in the middle of a transition to more pre-specified models of ID.3, which are expected to be delivered in the coming months, not least ID.3 with a smaller battery pack that has been well received, says Anita Svanes, communications manager at Volkswagen , to Motor.

She adds that Volkswagen Norway was awarded a solid volume of the various versions of ID.3 1ST last year. These were sold quickly and in large numbers at the end of 2020.

Tesla is not in the top 20

It is also not uncommon for the registration figures for January to deviate somewhat from the rest of the year. Some car brands have had a strong focus on registering as many cars as possible before the turn of the year, and thus take a “resting cut” in January.

Top 20 car models, January 2021

  1. Number of cars sold in parentheses.
  2. Toyota RAV4 (812)
  3. Audi e-tron (734)

  19. Hyundai Kona Electric (152)
  20. BMW X2 (147)
  21. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (134)

The delivery situation of cars can also play a role here. For example, Tesla is not even among the 20 best-selling car brands in January. In fact, it is not uncommon. Tesla has a tradition of delivering the vast majority of its cars in Norway in the last month of each quarter. Thus, we can probably also expect it to be quiet in February, before a new peak comes in March.
