From Eredivisie-match between Speed and Sparta was shut down in injury time and then permanently discontinued. Sparta goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was already harassed by a field stormer and then also got projectiles thrown at him.
Vitesse and Sparta had just entered the seven-minute extra time when they were called in by referee Rob Dieperink. Sparta led 0-1 thanks to Adrián Dalmau and Okoye had saved a penalty from Loïs Openda. In the extra time, the Nigerian closing post first got a field storm on his roof, but Okoye brushed him off. However, after he got a beer mug thrown at him, he went down, after which Dieperink decided to stop the match.
It was not yet clear whether the game would be played out. Dieperink initially seemed to be aiming for a cooling off period of five minutes, but the game has been stopped for more than twenty minutes. Behind the closed doors of the players tunnel, internal consultations are being held by the responsible parties, while the stands of the GelreDome Stadium empty.
According to ESPN Sparta did not want to continue playing. In any case, after the long interruption, it was decided not to resume the game. Whether the 0-1 score will remain or the injury time will still be played out will have to become clear at a later stage.
