Vitamin D has the potential to reduce the risk of death from Corona

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) found insufficient evidence to suggest that vitamin D provide positive support to the patient Covid-19. The results of the study stated that the consumption of sufficient vitamin D resulted in a number of infected individuals corona virus and is being cared for protected.

The study, which analyzed data on 235 people who were hospitalized for Covid-19, found that about 51.5 percent were less likely to die from infection. This is because patients who are over 40 years of age are getting sufficient vitamin D intake.

Adequate dosage is defined as at least 30 ng / mL of vitamin D.

The study’s lead author, physician Michael F. Holick, said this study provides direct evidence that vitamin D can reduce complications, including cytokine storms or the rapid release of a lot of protein into the blood.

“And it [badai sitokin] ultimately causing death due to Covid-19, “continued Holick who is also a professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics as well as molecular medicine at BUSM, quoted from Forbes.

The study authors emphasized some of the limitations of this study including, among others, patients who had a record of low vitamin D 25 (OH) levels.

“Several confounding factors such as smoking and socioeconomic status were not recorded for all patients and could have an impact on the severity of Covid-19 infection. In addition, the RT-PCR test was not carried out on all patients with clinical symptoms of Covid-19,” he added.

The research method used a cross-sectional technique, and therefore the authors did not explain the cause and effect of vitamin D adequacy with a reduced risk of the severity of Covid-19 infection. To study causation, there needs to be large-scale studies and acat clinical trials (RCTs).

Holick published a separate study recently that found that adequate levels of vitamin D can reduce the risk of contracting Covid-19 by between 19 and 54 percent. He also believes that adequate levels of vitamin D can help ward off other viruses that cause respiratory tract diseases, including influenza.

“Because vitamin D deficiency or vitamin D insufficiency is so prevalent in children and adults in the United States and around the world, especially in winter, everyone should take vitamin D supplements to reduce their risk of becoming infected and experiencing complications due to Covid. -19, “he suggested.

This July, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released a statement stating that there was not enough data to recommend the use of vitamin D in the prevention or treatment of Covid-19.

Quoted from the health page Health Line, most healthy people need 10-20 micrograms (400-800 IU). Regarding the prevention of COVID-19, quoted from the page WebMDHealth experts recommend about 10-25 micrograms (400-1000 IU) of vitamin D per day.

Natural sources of vitamin D can be obtained from eggs, fish, milk or fortified foods and mushrooms. The source of vitamin D can also come from sunlight.

Apart from vitamin D, experts also recommend the adequacy of vitamin C. However, you still need to consult your doctor about this dosage.

As for the consumption of vitamin C and D supplements, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist at Pondok Indah Hospital – Puri Indah, Raissa Edwina Djuanda, advised that you consult a doctor first. Because, he said, this was related to the health condition of each person, including body weight.

“Vitamin C and D have been recommended by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia to be given to people who are positively infected with the COVID-19 virus,” said Raissa as quoted by Antara.

The amount of intake needed by each person can vary. According to Raissa, in general people who are underweight or smaller need smaller doses of vitamins.
