Notification procedure for an internship lasting a maximum of 90 days: Interns from the EU/EFTA area only have to be registered by the employer up to a maximum working time of 90 days: information and form

For an internship of more than 90 days the interns must register with the municipality of residence with the employment contract within 14 days of arrival in Switzerland. You will then receive the residence permit (“L permit”) for the duration of the internship.

IAESTE Switzerland organizes the visa and the residence and work permit for these interns.
Required documents from the employer:

  • Copy of the employment contract signed by the employer and the employee
  • Training plan for the internship (detailed job description)
  • signed application form from the cantonal authorities

In order for the permit to be ready in time, we must submit the application at least six weeks before the start of work submit to the authorities.

Interns from Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia do not need a visa, but receive one Guarantee of the residence permitwhich entitles you to reside and work in Switzerland.

Interns from all other third countries need a entry visa. The visa will be sent to a Swiss representation in the intern’s home country and must be picked up there. Entry into Switzerland for work purposes is not permitted without a visa, and the visa accordingly cannot be issued in Switzerland.

For a stay of more than 4 months, the interns must also register with the municipality of residence within 14 days of their arrival in Switzerland and will then receive their residence permit.
