Activists from across the Rhine-Main area are organizing a star trip to the Opel city of Rüsselsheim to demonstrate for a “traffic turn instead of a car turnaround”.

On Friday, around 200 Fridays for Future activists took part in a bicycle trip to Rüsselsheim under the motto “Traffic turn instead of car turnaround”. In Darmstadt alone, more than 50 demonstrators started from Karolinenplatz at noon to cycle to Opel City, reported Silas Bug, the spokesman for Fridays for Future Darmstadt. Other groups started in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Mainz and in the Rheingau.

On the occasion of the negotiations on the Corona economic stimulus programs, the activists called for “a climate-friendly reconstruction of the economy and a comprehensive turnaround in transport”. The fact that the scrappage bonus discussed is not coming is “a small success,” said Bug. However, this “only prevented a catastrophic step into the past”. “We are not satisfied with the economic stimulus program because the climate and, above all, climate justice have once again been neglected.” The federal government had “missed a historic opportunity and necessity,” said Bug.

The cycling demonstration groups met in Rüsselsheim on the banks of the Main. There was a program with speeches, music and poetry slams. Speakers from Scientists for Future, Black Lives Matter and IG Metall were also present.
