Viral beds of HIV patients covered in plastic, how vulnerable are healthcare workers to infections in hospitals?

Viral on social media uploading photos of hospital beds covered in plastic, told for people living with HIV. Not a few consider this a discriminatory treatment of PLHIV, but there are also those who see it as a management procedure to treat HIV-AIDS patients.

Aside from that, healthcare workers are a vulnerable group to contracting HIV even if the number of cases is small. They can get infected from needles, open wounds, stab wounds.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says HIV transmission in hospitals is very rare. Only 58 cases of work-related HIV transmission were confirmed to health services.

The risk of healthcare workers being exposed to HIV will be greater if there is a higher amount of viral load in the patient’s blood. The extent of the surgeon’s risk depends on the prevalence of HIV in the patient population, the number of procedures performed by the surgeon, and the length of the risk period.

On the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s HIV AIDS Information System page, several guidelines on HIV prevention in the workplace for health care workers are available, including:

  • Maintain hand hygiene
  • Provide personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Patient positioning
  • Management of used medical devices
  • Environmental management
  • Linen management
  • Safe injection practices
  • Infection prevention practices for lumbar puncture procedures
  • Protection and health of employees by carrying out post-exposure management (exposure)
