Violence and Hooliganism in European Football: Greece’s Efforts to Combat the Problem and UEFA’s Call for Cooperation

“Violence and hooliganism are not a Greek, but a European problem,” said UEFA President Čeferin. “Let’s not call these people fans, but the cancer of football that they use for their idiotic ideas,” he continued.

Mitsotakis intends to abolish all organized fan clubs in his country, according to him there will be only one official one connected to the club. The police will also be given greater powers and controls at stadiums will be tightened.

Greece has repeatedly tried to deal with problematic supporters. The heads of the four largest clubs in the country, Panathinaikos, AEK Athens, Olympiakos Piraeus and PAOK Thessaloniki, also attended the meeting in Athens. Both Čeferin and the Prime Minister called for the greatest possible cooperation.

Before the match of the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League last Tuesday in Athens, a 29-year-old AEK fan died, succumbing to stab wounds. Several hundred people took part in the skirmishes, approximately 150 were Croats.

Fans from both camps threw flares, firecrackers and stones at each other. Several dozen hooligans ended up in custody, ten in hospital. The trial of the suspects is ongoing.

The match did not take place after the tragic event, it will take place this Saturday as a return match. AEK won 2:1 in Zagreb on Tuesday. The eliminated team will face Sparta Prague in the final preliminary round of the Europa League.
