Villingen-Schwenningen: March 10th: Villingen-Schwenningen hoists the flag for Tibet – Tibetan flag is hoisted in front of town halls at the Villinger Münster and at the Schwenningen market square

The city of Villingen-Schwenningen is again taking part in the “One Flag for Tibet” campaign this year and will hoist the Tibetan flag in front of the town halls at Villingen Cathedral and Schwenningen Market Square on Thursday, March 10th.

In doing so, the city expresses its solidarity with the decades of non-violent resistance of the Tibetans against the Chinese occupation policy and expresses the hope of the Tibetan people and their supporters for a future of peace, freedom and self-determination. In addition to the Ukraine and European flags hanging from the town halls, the Tibetan flag is more than ever a symbol of peace in the current situation.

Further information on the campaign is available online at www.tibet-flagge.de:
“Flying the flag for Tibet” is a campaign by the “Tibet Initiative Germany” association. The day of action also commemorates the suppression of the popular uprising in Tibet on March 10, 1959. As a result of the Chinese occupation in 1949/50, the Tibetans in Lhasa rose up against the Chinese occupying power. About 300,000 Tibetans gathered in front of his summer residence Norbulingka out of concern for the life of the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama had to flee into exile in India and the uprising was brutally suppressed. At least 87,000 Tibetans lost their lives. Today, between 120,000 and 150,000 of the six million Tibetans live in exile.
