The Board of Directors of the College of Actors of Puerto Rico (CAPR) will inaugurate the Centro de Bellas Artes de Vieques Iris Martínez Figueroa, this April 18.
The management of naming her after the actress born on Isla Nena began in 2013, by the Viequenses Committee by Iris Martínez, together with professor Ismael Guadalupe, producer Pedro Muñiz and the family of Manuel Mellado Castaño, until it was captured by the current mayor, José Antonio Corcino Acevedo.
On Sunday, a contingent of about 70 actors, actresses, and theater workers will board the boat to Vieques from Ceiba, at 8:00 a.m. Before leaving, everyone will be tested for covid-19 and the relevant protocols will be followed until they return to the big island.
The first activity will be a mass in honor of Iris (1924-2017), in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Isabel Segunda, at 11:00 in the morning. At the end, the mayor and José Martínez, president of the CAPR and tutor of the deceased actress, will pronounce a few words.
“During the transfer of the ashes to the interior patio of the CBA, the song Iris Sol, by the singer-songwriter Ramón ‘Moncho’ Saldaña, will be heard. The burial will take place in a niche built by the municipality and he will say goodbye with several songs by Choco Orta, Jerry Segarra, Luis Enrique Romero and the Vieques Concert Band, ”Martínez informed THE SPOKESMAN.
At 3:00 pm the official inauguration events of the place will begin. The activity will be broadcast on Facebook Live / Anamín Santiago.
“In life and even now, I was her official tutor since she directed the Tapia Theater in San Juan, because of her delicate health and because I saw that she was alone in the world. She was the first president of CAPR and we could not leave her helpless. So we made a committee with Don Manuel Mellado Castaño and Pedro Muñiz to make all this feasible and we have continued with the project seeing great interest from the new Vieques administration, ”Martínez said.
