Victims of abuse in youth care receive 5,000 euros compensation NOW

The cabinet will present a compensation scheme for victims of abuse and sexual abuse in youth care, as was announced during a meeting on Friday. An amount of 5,000 euros is available for each victim.

“The conversations with victims from all walks of life, of all ages, have made a huge impression on us,” said Sander Dekker, Minister of Legal Protection.

The Committee for Research into Violence in Youth Care concluded last year that a significant proportion of children who stayed in youth care institutions or foster families from 1945 to the present are insufficiently protected against physical, psychological and sexual violence.

Examples were given of children who did not eat their food, were then tied up and the food was pushed in with a funnel. If they vomited, they had to eat their own vomit.

In addition to the archive investigation, a hotline was also opened. More than nine hundred victims reported. The expectation is that the scheme will start this fall.
