(Reuters) – Rapper Fat Joe invited to the White House to discuss reforming marijuana laws, visited an abortion clinic, called for a cease-fire in Gaza at a bridge in Alabama where the “Bloody Sunday” massacre occurred, and in Florida Walking the scene of a tragic school shooting in the state. In recent weeks, US Vice President Harris has stepped out of President Biden’s shadow and made her presence felt. The target is voters who have turned away from Biden as he seeks a second term.

Mr. Biden has been criticized by the progressive wing of the Democratic Party for his pro-Israel stance, and polls show that his support is even with that of his rival, former President Trump.See more

Harris, 59, has been more involved than Biden in hot-button issues, even as left-leaning voters take issue with Biden’s age and lack of leadership.

For example, the issue of abortion, which puts women at risk for their lives. Biden has defended abortion rights, but emphasized that it is a “very personal and painful” issue.

In response, Harris visited an abortion clinic, which was believed to be the first time for a sitting vice president, and said, “We also do issues like uterine fibroids, breast cancer screenings, and contraceptive care here. And of course we provide abortion care.” She made it clear that abortion is a fundamental part of women’s medical care.

In Selma, Alabama, where Bloody Sunday took place in 1965 during the civil rights movement, regarding Israel’s attack on the Islamic group Hamas, “Given the immeasurable suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire.” This was the most in-depth statement of any senior administration official. He also called on Israel to do more to alleviate what he called a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza.

Harris’ use of “ceasefire” was a term that left-wing members of the Democratic Party had been waiting for and was highly praised by some.

But a leader of a group calling for people to protest against Biden in the Democratic primary with “no candidate to support” said, “There’s no doubt that the vice president is trying to change the conversation to a more empathetic conversation about Gaza. “If there is no evidence that we are pushing for more meaningful policy change, introducing new words will not have any impact.” What Harris needs to do is “knock Biden on the butt to change American policy,” he said.

When it comes to suggestions that there are differences in policy between Ms. Harris and Mr. Biden, Ms. Harris’ current and former aides dispute that the difference lies in the way they speak and the emphasis they place. Harris said her efforts reflect areas of interest that, in some cases, go back to her time as a prosecutor.

“She’s on the cutting edge of some of the most important issues facing this country, issues that will be decisive in this election,” said Dave Cavell, Harris’ former speechwriter.

Biden needs conservative votes to win the election. But he cannot emphasize divisive cultural issues without drawing a backlash from conservatives, new and old aides say. As the Democratic Party’s “coalition leader,” Biden needs to focus on core economic issues and attract the attention of centrists.

In fact, when Biden visited election battleground states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania this year, he touted economic policies that are directly connected to families, such as bringing back manufacturing jobs that had been sent overseas and supporting labor unions. On the other hand, Ms. Harris is conducting a campaign tour that goes beyond economic policy with themes such as “fighting for reproductive freedom” and “fighting for freedom.”

Harris often faces criticism on the campaign trail. He has also been criticized as a “war criminal,” especially over the Biden administration’s pro-Israel policies.

Some White House aides are concerned about whether he will be able to fulfill his role as administration spokesperson. However, Harris has a strong supporter in Biden.

Ms. Harris has also been careful not to give the impression that she is out of step with President Biden. Mr. Biden said of Ms. Harris in February, “I love her,” and in March that “she’s doing a great job.”
