A statement from the Vatican Press Service states that the seized material comes from the Fabbrica di San Pietro technical and administrative service. That institution was founded in the fifteenth century, even before the current basilica was built.
The raid followed a tip from the general auditor, who checks the accounts of the Vatican institutions. Pope Francis has temporarily appointed a commissioner to head the Fabbrica di San Pietro, according to the statement.
He needs to reorganize the institution and adjust procurement procedures to reduce the risk of procurement fraud. The Pope announced measures against corruption earlier this month.
