Bisphenol A: Implications on Hormones, Autism, and ADHD

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting substance found in plastic containers, water bottles, and even sunglasses. It not only mimics human hormones and affects the production of natural hormones, but is also linked to reduced male sperm production, infertility, and prostate cancer. related to breast cancer, etc. Recently, a relevant foreign study found for the first time that the ability of children with autism and ADHD to excrete bisphenol A is 10 to 20% weaker than that of ordinary children.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, bisphenol A is also known as a “gender-bending” chemical because it is related to hormones and sex. Researchers from Rowan University and Rutgers University in the United States found that children with autism and ADHD are unable to excrete BPA from the body as quickly as normal children.

In the study, which was published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE in September, researchers measured the detoxification efficiency of 66 children with autism, 46 children with ADHD, and 37 neurologically normal children. The participants were aged 3 to 16 years old. Research results show that the ability of children with autism to eliminate bisphenol A from their own bodies is 10% lower than normal, while that of children with ADHD is 17% lower.

In view of the dangers of bisphenol A, as early as the beginning of this year, European officials had significantly reduced the maximum content of bisphenol A by 20,000 times. Reports pointed out that the United States has the highest incidence of autism and ADHD in the world. One of the countries with the highest autism rates has increased by 52% since 2017, but the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed higher limits on bisphenol A content.

However, the research team also stated that it has only been found that children with autism and ADHD have difficulty excreting bisphenol A, but more research is still needed to prove whether exposure to bisphenol A increases the risk of autism or ADHD.
